...HOT NEWS...FRIDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER 2010
KAREN HAS JUST WON
THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS COMPETITION!

WELL DONE TO HER!

Captain's log: Stardate: Wednesday 1st September 2010

Bank Holiday Weekend

The late August Harefield monsoon season which caused the abandonment of the Cowley game
after 5 ends finally abated to give us some decent bowling weather over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The fixture against Eastcote featured the three rink MML game and two ladies triples.
The MML game was a tight and cagey affair in doubt up to the last three ends. Richard, Eddie, Mick
and Nigel came through a distinctly dodgy mid-game spell to register a 22-19 win, Tony lost narrowly
and John's rink just let it slip at the end after being level at 18 ends and qualified for the Marigolds.
The result was a 2-8 loss but Harefield are still likely to finish 3rd in the league behind Uxbridge
and Ladygate which is a creditable performance.

The ladies triples both won well with Pauline, Sheila and Karen (skipping !!)
nabbing the pens with a fine 29 - 10 scoreline. Harefield won the overall game by 10 shots.

It IS the Winning...!

Harefield then went to Flackwell Heath on Sunday knowing that probably only a win on all rinks
would keep their TCL title challenge alive. However, they produced the best performance of the season
to do just that. As Harefield led comfortably on the other rinks all eyes turned to rink two
where Sheila, Bob L, Ted and Jim were engaged in a very tight struggle. They held their collective nerve
to come out on top 19-17 in the best win of the day. There was a slight dispute as to the top rink
as both Tony and Nigel's rinks tied on +18 shots. However, as the Captain's rink of Doreen, Eddie, Mick
and Nigel were adjudged (by the Captain) to be, on balance, slightly better looking they picked up the pens!!!

It's still not clear what this means in terms of the league, but with a 65 shot win,
Harefield could not have done more to leave themselves in with a shout.

Bank Holiday Monday Bowls Drive

Ron Eden's Crown Green Bowls Day on Monday was a huge success.
After some initial incomprehension of the complicated rules, featuring confusing concepts
such as 'gate', 'two woods', 'pairs' and '19 metres' the green echoed to cheers as bowls
collided mid-green or smacked into someone else's Jack. Winners were Chris Attree and John Harris.
Commendations in despatches for those people in dress reminiscent of the Jarrow March,
in particular Dave Hopwood who came as James Bolam from 'When the Boat Comes in' for the first half
and Biffa Bacon's dad from Viz comic for the second. Altogether, t'event were right gradeley.

External Competitions

The Harefield Ladies continue to thrive in outside competitions. This report has been delayed to include
the results from yesterday's Middlesex quarter and semi finals where Karen had two great wins
over very strong opposition to reach the final of the Middlesex Champion of Champions singles.
She was also crowned Hillingdon Borough Ladies Singles champion on Monday.
In addition to her earlier successes in winning the Middlesex Unbadged singles
and coming runner-up in the Harrow Borough Ladies singles, this is a fantastic achievement!

Congratulations also to Phyllis and Maureen R who were semi-finalists in the
Middlesex
slightly over 21 pairs, another strong competition.
Bridget, Chris M and Chris A (+ Linda (?) a guest) won the Harrow Ladies gala day with the other
Harefield Ladies rink of Phyllis, Maureen R, Doreen and Angela also winning the other section
in the event. Well done to all the Ladies who have enjoyed a great season!

And now a list of the Men's successes..............................................................

Moving swiftly on, this week's games are friendlies against Pavilion on Thursday and Northwood on Sunday.
Please note: Rickmansworth have cancelled Saturday's game through lack of players.

The club semi-finals are in full swing and it has become clear that the end of the season is in sight
as even the Round Robin (or Sparrow if you are the vice-captain) has kicked off.

Karen plays in the Middlesex finals on Friday at Ladygate.

Good luck to everybody in these games.
